What's the difference between a first fix and second-fix nail gun?

Nail Guns

Nail guns are used for a plethora of jobs such as joinery and woodworking. Whether you are roofing, wall framing, installing skirting or building furniture, a nail gun provides a fast and effective way of getting the job done.

There are two types of nail guns:

  • First fix nail guns, or framing nailers
  • Second fix nail guns, or finishing nailers and brad nailers

What's the difference?

Framing nailers are used for framing jobs and other rough woodwork on-site. These are much more powerful machines, they tend to leave dents and chips in the wood due to their power, but this doesn't matter much as there are suited more towards completing a job than the aesthetic of the finished product.

Finishing nailers are used for jobs that require a more delicate touch. These nailers are less powerful and use brad nails that have little to no head meaning they don't chip or dent the wood. This is ideal for jobs such as door frames, skirting furniture and more.

We have a great range of professional standard nail guns for hire. Our nail guns are battery-powered pieces of equipment that use air cartridges to shoot nails into the wood. These cordless nailers allow you to work anywhere without the restriction of cables or air hoses. Our first fix framing nailers are designed for use with clipped head nails between 50mm and 90mm, whilst our second fix nail guns are brad nailers, designed for use with 16 gauge nails between 15mm and 64mm.

You can book a nail gun hire online and collect it from your local store, or we can deliver it to you. We can also supply all the nails and air cartridges you need to get the job done.
